Udu Drums
Performed by Grammy-nominated percussionist, Will Clipman.
Explore the world of the Udu—a captivating ceramic drum with origins in the Igbo culture of Nigeria. Unlike conventional drums with rawhide heads, the Udu produces its mesmerizing tones through the skillful hand slapping of its side hole. Additional rhythmic sounds emerge as you tap the sides and bottom using your palms and fingers, allowing for a broad range of musical expression.
Masterful Craftsmanship
At our studio, each Udu is carefully cast in large molds, ensuring a shell of consistent thickness essential for a rich sound. After the initial electric kiln firing, which results in either a white or terra cotta finish, select Udus undergo a second saggar firing. This intricate process encases the drum in a steel chamber with various materials, creating a stunning and unpredictable play of colors—making every Udu a truly unique work of art.
Finishing Touches
We finish each Udu with a high-quality tile sealer to preserve its vibrant appearance and enhance its luster, avoiding glaze to ensure the drum's sound remains vivid and alive. Plain Udus are available for $100 USD, while the artistically saggar-fired pieces are priced at $195. Shipping costs are not included, and shipments are padded, double-boxed, and insured for safe delivery. Please allow several weeks for shipping.
